IELTS Writing Test Guide For Test Takers

Preparation for IELTS test, particularly the writing section doesn’t just involve familiarizing the test format and learning studying grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. As one of the test takers, you should also be able to know exactly how you can respond to the tasks. You will be made to write an essay, letter, and be mindful about the things that you need to do and avoid.

In preparing for essay writing, make sure that you focus on the methods in discussing problems, causes and effects, solutions, opinions, agreeing or disagreeing, and advantages or disadvantages. There are three elements in writing an essay, namely the introduction, body, and conclusion.

Make sure that you make the introduction brief as you will only be given 40 minutes to complete the task. Write the general or basic facts of the essay for the introduction. For the body, you may make two to three paragraphs. Ensure that every essay contains the main idea and supporting idea. For the conclusion, you can create two to three sentences to provide some of your thoughts about the topic.

To write a letter, make sure that you focus on answering the question. Focus on the purpose of the letter and the recipient. If you know the recipient, you should use a less formal tone and formal if you don’t know the person you are writing the letter to. This letter can be a suggestion, request, apology, application, explanation, or complaint. It is similarly important that you know exactly how to start and end a letter. Plan and organize your sentences and review your writing. Planning includes knowing the number of paragraphs needed, the main points, necessary details, and the vocabulary. More importantly, do not write a letter that’s less than the word-count required, which is 150 words.

In preparing for this section, consider the four criterion areas namely the task achievement for task 1 and Task Response for task 2, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. The most misunderstood criterion area is the grammatical range and accuracy. Accuracy refers to making less error-free sentences and not making serious mistakes when using simple structures. While it is not acceptable to make a lot of errors with complex structures, it can get even more unacceptable if you make a lot of mistakes even if you are just using simple structures. Make sure that you don’t only focus on the tenses, but also on organizing your grammar.

For the do’s and don’ts, make sure that you brainstorm your ideas, organize your answers, and review your grammar. Also write clearly because it won’t be favorable to you if the examiner could not understand what you are trying to say. Avoid writing too little or too much or repeating similar ideas with the use of different words. Do not write in a note form or using bullet points to avoid penalties.
